This was the first Friday Five I sent to the tribe and an example of what you can expect to receive from yours truly. If you’re interested in receiving an email like this every Friday, join the tribe via the sign up form at the bottom of the page.

Aloha! The last work week of the year is done. You made it. And yes, it’s true that I stole this idea from Tim Ferriss.

Here’s 5 things that have swirled into my experience and made my gray matter percolate this past week:

A Question:

Instead of thinking about your goals for 2017, ask yourself:
“Why didn’t I accomplish my goals for 2016?”

A Quote:

“Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.”

-Horace Mann

Neil DeGrasse Tyson said quote will be engraved on his tombstone. I’m thinking about putting this quote on a custom coffee mug to serve as a daily reminder.

What I’m reading:

The Red Queen – Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature
by: Matt Ridley

It’s not a sex book, but it’s about sex and asks questions like: What is evolution anyway? Are we evolving? And why sex?

Our technological advances allow us to do more of the same things. The Red Queen theory recalls a wonderful quote from Alice in Wonderland:

“Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place.”

And I learned that “If sex had no cost, hummingbirds would not exist.

What I’m Listening to:

All I Need (feat Gift of Gab) – L’Orange, Jeremiah Jae
FIRE

Follow me on Spotify – Apparently I’m in their top 1% of Radiohead fans. It was an introspective year.

Recently watched:

Magnolia
I didn’t think I’d make it through its meaty 3 hours, but I did. There’s a lot to ponder in this compelling look at the power and difficulties of forgiveness, letting loved ones go, and honesty.

It includes this epic scene with Tom Cruise, and I promise its more tragic than funny once you see it within context:
